I came from humble beginnings before establishing myself as a self-made millionaire.
My family escaped persecution and immigrated to the US when I was 11. Although excited to begin a new life in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco, I soon realized the impact of having no formal education and the inability to read. I struggled in school as bullies made my challenging situation seem even tougher. Soon, I was kicked out, and landed firmly on a path of poverty, addiction, and violence.
My walk along that dark road lasted until I turned 20 and lost a close friend—a humbling wake-up call that reminded me that I had once dreamt of success in life and that goals without action are nothing more than wishes.
To escape the bleak future that lay before me, I left that environment and moved to Minnesota with just the clothes on my back and a fierce, burning desire to accomplish my goals—the sort of desire that keeps you going when the whole world seems set against you. I attended an alternative high school for kids-at-risk and earned my high school diploma—a far cry from the future that lay before my in the gang and drug-infested neighborhood I’d come from, where just staying out of jail was a success.
From there, I was able to graduate and attend the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management, where I earned my Bachelor’s Degree. I then went to earn my MBA at Rutger’s University—an achievement which in my previous life in San Francisco seemed an impossibility.
I spent the past 20+ years in various business leadership roles capturing opportunities and growing revenue for companies ranging from multi-billion dollar market leader, 3M, to midsize and start-up. I had the utmost pleasure of leading global teams from sales, marketing, R&D, manufacturing, and operations to serve our customers well. I’ve worked on diverse projects from manufacturing process improvements, mergers and acquisitions to leading the integration of the newly merged company, providing stability and change management strategies, and more. I am grateful for those opportunities to learn and grow from so many people in my career because I know that being a leader is a gift and not a simple title.
Although happy, I am not yet satisfied until I achieve my childhood dream of owning and running my own business. The adversity I faced taught me the humbling lessons of entrepreneurship: it takes courage, enduring grit, self-reflection, and an unbending optimism to navigate the waters of building companies.
And that’s the kind of passion, perseverance, and humility I’ll bring into your company: the drive and expertise to continue your legacy, foster the growth of your employees so that they can take care of their families, and support your valued customers.
